Volunteering for Clinical Research Studies

Clinical research studies are vital to improving the quality of care for those with chronic conditions.  Patients who volunteer at the AMCR Institute (AMCRI) contribute to the discovery of new therapies to treat and possibly cure their illness. You are an important link to cutting-edge research that can benefit people long before a medication or device becomes available in the healthcare marketplace.

At all times, AMCRI volunteers are well cared for under the direction of the Institute’s highly experienced Director Timothy Bailey, MD. Dr. Bailey, a board-certified endocrinologist, and his staff of clinical specialists have worked with thousands of volunteers over the past 20 years.  Sponsors of AMCRI trials include many of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

The study you volunteer for may involve new screening techniques, new drug therapies, or advanced monitoring devices. All AMCRI studies are designed by scientists to study the effects of new treatments and tools that can improve the quality of life for millions who suffer from diseases of the endocrine system, including diabetes.  These patient studies are authorized by the U.S. government only after the drugs or devices involved have been thoroughly tested in a laboratory setting. Each study has been reviewed and approved by a group of healthcare professionals responsible for protecting the rights and safety of all volunteers.

AMCRI studies are performed at no cost to the volunteer.  In addition, they provide free medical care and medication under the supervision of a boad-certified physician designed to improve overall disease management.  Travel expenses will be reimbursed for volunteers who live a considerable distance from our Escondido or Temecula offices. Your physician will receive full reports of your participation.  Most studies also compensate you for your time.

Each study has specific requirements such as age, sex, and a current diagnosis of the medical condition under study.  A physician reviews the medical history of anyone interested in participating.  All volunteers will be given details on the study procedures, risks and benefits as part of the required “informed consent” process.  This process allows volunteers to ask pertinent questions of the clinical study team and to be regularly informed about all aspects of the study they are involved with.

What is Research?

  • Research studies are conducted to answer a specific question.
  • Scientists perform research studies in an effort to discover innovative methods of patient care and to improve those already in existence.
  • Research is also described as a clinical trial, protocal, survey, or experiment.
  • Research studies are not to be confused with treatment.

Why is Research Important?

Research has led to important discoveries that improve our lives. Some examples are:

  • New drugs to treat cancer, diabetes and other diseases
  • Ultrasound, x-ray machines and diagnostic tests
  • Vaccines
  • Ways to stop smoking
  • Improved medical procedures
